August has provided a valuable opportunity to spend more time out and about across the Daventry Constituency, meeting residents, visiting local businesses and organisations, and attending some of the fantastic community events taking place over the summer.

In this month’s newsletter, you’ll find updates on some of the visits and events I have attended, including supporting a local NHS blood donation session, joining communities across the constituency and judging the Long Buckby Scarecrow Competition. There is also a reminder to cast your vote in this year’s Daventry Constituency Best Pub Awards before voting closes later this month.

Parliament returns following the summer recess in September, and I look forward to continuing to raise the issues that matter to residents both in Westminster and here at home.

A great day at the Blakesley Show

It was a pleasure to attend the 141st Blakesley Show this month and spend time meeting local farmers, businesses, exhibitors and organisations from across our area.

The show is a fantastic celebration of our rural and agricultural communities, bringing together everything from livestock and countryside displays to local businesses and community groups.

Events like this also provide an important opportunity to hear directly from those who live and work in our rural communities about the issues that matter to them.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising another successful Blakesley Show and to all those who took part.

A new front door for urgent and emergency care

I was pleased to join colleagues, NHS staff, partners and patient representatives at Northampton General Hospital to mark the opening of its newest building.

The new facilities will gradually become the hospital’s new front door for urgent and emergency care.

It was good to see the facilities first-hand and speak with those who will be working there to care for patients from across Northamptonshire.

Improving accessibility for Deaf residents

I recently met with Alice O’Dell, founder of Impact4Deaf, to hear more about their work and some of the barriers experienced by Deaf people and those with hearing loss across Northamptonshire.

We discussed the importance of making sure people can access local services, employment, education and opportunities to participate fully in their communities.

It was useful to hear directly from Alice about the experiences of the Deaf community and Impact4Deaf’s plans as the organisation continues to develop.

Thank you to Alice for taking the time to meet with me and share some of the issues they are working to address.

Meeting with Wilby residents

I recently attended a public meeting at Wilby Working Men’s Club to hear residents’ concerns about parking, highways and other issues in the village.

Residents raised concerns including vehicles being parked on roads and pavements, pedestrian access, bus stops and the impact on residents and local businesses. Representatives from Northamptonshire Police and North Northamptonshire Council attended alongside local councillors.

Following the meeting, I am working to bring the relevant agencies together to look at the issues raised and what practical action may be possible. It is also important that the businesses concerned have the opportunity to put forward their perspective as part of this process.

Apprenticeships at Royal Mail

It was great to visit Royal Mail’s Midlands Super Hub, here in the Daventry Constituency, and meet some of the apprentices working there.

I spoke directly with apprentices about why they chose this route, what they are learning and their experiences so far.

Royal Mail has around 1,000 apprentices across the business, including young people beginning their careers and existing employees developing new skills.

It is encouraging to see opportunities like these being provided by a major employer right here in our constituency.

Summer Campaign Academy

It was fantastic to spend time with the young people who took part in this year’s Summer Campaign Academy.

Across three days they had the chance to learn more about politics and campaigning, hear from councillors and campaigners, visit a major local employer and get practical experience out campaigning in communities across the constituency.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time to support the Academy and, most importantly, to the young people who threw themselves into everything we had planned.

A reminder that voting is still open in this year’s Daventry Constituency Best Pub Awards.

Pubs from across the constituency are competing in categories celebrating everything from great food and beer gardens to community pubs, rural pubs and our fantastic local micropubs.

Thank you to everyone who has already cast their vote and supported their favourite local. The awards are all about celebrating the pubs, publicans and teams that play such an important role in communities across our area.

If you haven’t voted yet, there’s still time to have your say.
